A World within a World

“You present a quality, architectural, no purpose. Just a recognition of something which you can’t define, but must be built… But that’s a definite architectural quality. It has the same quality as all religious places…It’s the beginning of architecture. It isn’t made out of a handbook. It doesn’t start from practical issues. It starts from a kind of feeling that there must be a world within a world.”
Louis Kahn, Silence and Light, lecture first delivered at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, December 3, 1968, quoted in James F. Williamson, A World within a World: The Design of a Campus Interfaith Chapel

Like a small photograph - Peter Behrens

“Art is the performance of the cosmic drama in which by means of pictures as symbols the cosmic event is shown in deep convincing acts. The cosmic story, the cosmic drama, the cosmic statue, the cosmic painting, the cosmic building, in short, the harmony, the whole cosmos put together in one aspect, like a small photograph which shows the whole scene.”
J.L.M. Lauweriks, Het nut en doel der kunst, in Theosophia, 1907
Quoted in and translated by F.G. Evelein, “‘Pure Theosophical art.’ cosmogenesis, cosmic consciousness and evolution.”
Paper presented at the Society of Architectural Historians Annual Meeting, April 1996, via Susan R. Henderson
